This presentation introduces some of the research activities conducted in the Embedded Systems Group (subgroup of the Technology Platforms Section, Department of Electronic Systems) at Aalborg University.

The presentation starts with a few words about the speaker and Aalborg University. Then some of the research activities conducted in our group are introduced:

-     Hardware/Software Codesign: our work deals with methods for the design of embedded systems composed of both hardware components (e.g. FPGAs, dedicated digital circuits) and software (e.g. micro-processor/controller, DSP). Our work includes contributions on metrics for hardware/software partitioning and design complexity evaluation.

 

-     Reconfigurable  Computing: a first project deals with a method that combines temporal partitioning and multiprocessor scheduling for heterogeneous reconfigurable architectures (i.e composed of various types of processing elements). A second project deals with reconfigurable stochastic computing. So far we have shown that stochastic behavior can be introduced in FPGAs using external noise sources as exemplified by the behavior of an FPGA IO block subject to voltage/frequency scaling and Vdd-noise.

 

-     Hardware Reimplementation for Digital Preservation: this new activity deals with the FPGA-based hardware reimplementation of old computers with the purpose of preserving them over time.

About the speaker:

Yannick Le Moullec earned his PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from Université de Bretagne Sud, Lorient, France, in 2003. From 2003 to 2005 he was a Post-doc fellow, CISS, Denmark. From 2005 to 2008 he was Research Assistant, Department of Electronic Systems, Aalborg University, where he is now Associate Professor. His research interests include methods and tools for HW/SW co-design, embedded systems, reconfigurable computing, and hardware digital preservation.

Yannick Le Moullec is currently on a three-month research visit at SIMIT, Shanghai, working on FPGA-based digital predistortion for power amplifiers.
